Overplay?

My second game of the summer supplied an interesting situation. Look at the following diagram. White 7 usually is an overplay so I was all ready to punish it.

But there is this extra white stone. Does that change White 7 from an overplay into a good move? Or does it not?

During the game I looked at it and said 'Nah, that stone is too far away, I will just punish.' Was that the right decision? Let me know what y'all think.

your 3.3 invasion is a question mark. You can b4 but then after white will just b5 and then next white will protect e4. b3 is a trick play that really doesnt work cause white will just play e4 probably. Instead of the 3.3 invasion you can try diferent things like d8 and f4

How did you punish? As far as I know, without the two additional stones, black plays b3 and then cuts in e4 only if white answers b4; cutting directly creates a situation where you can easily lose control.

Hi Karen,

I think white 7 is playable in this position, but locally it still looks better for black.

I think the problem is that white 3 doesn't work well with white's h4 stone.

It's hard to say for sure without seeing the rest of the board, but I think it would be more efficient to try to work with h4. For white 3, f4 or c4 look good. Also, white 3 at b5 is worth considering, but probably isn't as good.

In the game, if black just plays to take the corner, I think black is better, h4 is wasted.

By the way, I'm back from China and I finally have the time and motivation to blog again :) (after 2 years). An Younggil and I have started a new site together called .

Cheers,

David
